Chindongo sp."elongatus ornatus" (formerly known as Pseudotropheus sp."elongatus ornatus") is living in the rocky environments of the most northern part of Likoma Island at Makulawe Point and also at Ndumbi Rocks, a little northern from Likoma Island. These examples are from Makulawe Point. At Makulawe Point, the males of this species grow to 11 cm. However, in the aquarium they can grow a little taller because of good nutrition. The males can grow up to 13 cm, females grow up to 9 cm. However, at Ndumbi Rocks this species grows about 2 cm smaller than the ones from Makulawe Point. Chindongo sp."elongatus ornatus" can behave intolerant against equal species, against other inhabitants they are in general tolerant. You can best keep this species with multiple females and other mbunas in an aquarium with a lot of hiding places. In the lake they are mainly feeding themselves with algae which they find on the rocks and plankton. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix. Food rich of algae like spirulina pellets or flakes is very important to them so this should not be missing on their menu. |
